Portuguese Flannel Stretch
The story

This is a flannel, woven in Portugal and sold as a travel cloth. Two percent elastane sits in it, which is what makes a flannel trouser easy to wear for a long day rather than something you change out of. The cut is relaxed, the waistband elasticated with a drawstring, so nothing digs in when you sit for hours. Flannel wants a cooler iron than a plain cotton trouser: inside out, low heat. Wash it at 30°C with a mild detergent and similar colours, and keep it away from the tumble dryer.

Why choose it

For the trouser you travel in and then keep on when you arrive.

01

Woven and made in Portugal

Both the cloth and the trouser come from Portugal.

02

Sold as a travel cloth

That is what it was bought for: a flannel with give in it, for days spent sitting still.

03

Two percent elastane

The other ninety-eight percent is cotton.

04

A cooler iron

Low heat, inside out. Flannel takes less heat than a plain twill.

What you pay for

Clifton Relaxed Fit Pants: €139 here. €209 average market price.

Average market price is what a comparable piece costs from a brand that sells through other people's shops: department stores and multi-brand retailers. That price has to carry the brand's margin and the shop's margin, stacked. Ours carries one.

Margin is not profit. It goes to getting the piece to your door: shipping, returns, the warehouse. Then to running No Label: the team, the stores, the fit sessions, the photography. What is left goes into next season's fabric. On sale pieces there is often nothing left at all, because overstock is money sitting in a warehouse and we would rather it moved than marked up.
