The story
Brushing lifts the fibre ends out of the weave on the inside face, so the cloth traps a layer of air against you without getting any heavier. Ours is woven in Portugal, mostly on plain cotton, with one quality carrying one percent elastane. The patterns are woven in rather than printed: check, houndstooth and a fine stripe. Brushed cloth reads matte instead of crisp, which is why these sit closer to knitwear than to a poplin shirt.
