The story

Twenty-two percent of this cloth is polyurethane against seventy-eight percent polyester, and it is built to hold rain out rather than bead it away. It carries a 3000 mm water column and the seams are taped, so water cannot work its way in through the stitching, which is where it usually gets in. The cloth is windproof and breathable, and it has stretch in it, which is not a given in a shell and is the difference between a jacket you can move in and one you fight. One style is cut from it. The cloth is Italian and the jacket is made up in Macedonia. It still goes in the machine at 30°C on a gentle spin.

Why choose it

For the day when staying dry is the point of the jacket.

01

3000 mm, stated

The water column is written on the garment: 3000 mm. It is the only cloth in the range that carries a rating at all.

02

The seams are taped

Stitching makes holes. Taping covers them, which is the part of a waterproof jacket most people never see.

03

Windproof and breathable

Both are claimed on the cloth. It holds the wind off without sealing you inside it.

04

Stretch in a shell

The cloth is a stretch fabric, so the sleeve follows the arm instead of resisting it.

What you pay for

Stratford Waterproof Trenchcoat: €299 here. €449 average market price.

Average market price is what a comparable piece costs from a brand that sells through other people's shops: department stores and multi-brand retailers. That price has to carry the brand's margin and the shop's margin, stacked. Ours carries one.

Margin is not profit. It goes to getting the piece to your door: shipping, returns, the warehouse. Then to running No Label: the team, the stores, the fit sessions, the photography. What is left goes into next season's fabric. On sale pieces there is often nothing left at all, because overstock is money sitting in a warehouse and we would rather it moved than marked up.
